Visit to Bedford
February 2005
John Bunyan
Bunyan Meeting
Members examine the old pews that were retained in the gallery of the Bunyan Meeting Free Church, on the site of the orchard and barn, purchased by Bunyan and his friends in 1672, where he used to preach.
It was a postcard of this window in the church, showing Bunyan writing The Pilgrim's Progress in his prison cell, that sustained Terry Waite during his long captivity.
Bedford Museum
Higgins Museum
We also visited the John Bunyan Museum and the Bedford Museum (seen above) that included more reconstructions of the past.
The impressive Cecil Higgins Art Gallery and Museum, with its reconstructions of Victorian rooms, and extensive art collection, came as quite a surprise to those of us who had not been before.
